How To Get The Most From Salt Water Fly Fishing

Salt water fly fishing can be something of a culture shock to someone who has spent their whole life fishing in fresh water, but the techniques are not actually that different. The main difference is in the weight of the equipment that you will need to use to achieve the greatest result. There are many fishermen who seem to think it is clever to try to do salt water fishing with the type of light rod you use for fresh water, but there is nothing clever about it. It may look spectacular to see a rod bending, but all it does is make the catch unnecessarily hard and cause unnecessary suffering to the fish.

Ideally, the rod should be the same heavy weight of rod that you would use to catch a pike, if not even heavier. Apart from the obvious consideration of making the catch as easy as possible, salt water fishermen are typically caught in far more wind than those who fish in fresh water. The heavier rod makes the casting process far more accurate and far less prone to go seriously wrong. If you fish because it is enjoyable, you will want to eliminate the time wasted on false casts.

The other major difference is in the conditions which salt water fisherman have to endure. While there obviously are still and calm days, they are far fewer and further between that you will find inland. You will need to be able to adjust your clothing to be able to cope with the prevailing conditions, and you will need to be able to cope physically with the tougher conditions. Much salt water fishing demands a high level of fitness.

The essence of salt water fly fishing lies in being able to convince the fish that your fly is in fact food that it should be eating. To this end, many flies are produced which stimulate different types of food that the fish would normally eat. These can include eels and worms, as well as shrimp and crabs. It has to be said, though, that fishermen have also achieved success with all manner of colorful flies which resemble absolutely nothing. They just stand out and are surprisingly effective.

There are many locations in North America where salt water fly fishing is exceptional by anyone's standards, and these locations are not overly difficult to reach. If you leave near a coast, there is likely to be a place very close to you where you can fish. Some of the very best locations probably will mean a more difficult trip, but why not? If you schedule a fly in trip with an established organizer, they will take care of all the arrangements for you, and you can just concentrate on fishing. This is the luxurious way to experience salt water fly fishing.
